About Me

I am Sumiti Mehta, a proud Natomas parent, NP3 school board member and first generation immigrant. Since 2009, I have worked closely with Natomas schools, collaborating with district administration, teachers, classified employees and parents to support our most disadvantaged students.

As an immigrant, mom, parent and a woman of color, I intimately understand the hurdles faced by parents who must become fierce advocates for their children. My transformation from an anxious parent with a heavy accent to an established youth advocate has deeply influenced my dedication to this cause. I’ve had a lot to learn on the way, and now I’m here to share my knowledge and passion for access to quality education by running for trustee so that all students and families can get the education they deserve.

My Experience

Community Leader & Volunteer

My Story:

I was raised by a loving family in India who always prioritized my education. I was lucky to have been exposed to so many opportunities but I was well aware that educational excellence was not achievable for every child back home. When I moved to Natomas fourteen years ago, I experienced barriers such as accessing in-language forms, transportation challenges, as well as keeping up with my children’s needs. I’ve had the privilege to be able to take the time to be an involved parent for my children, but I quickly realized this is not the reality for many kids' parents in Natomas–just like the kids in India who didn’t have the same opportunities I did growing up because my parents were present.

That’s why for over a decade, I’ve dedicated myself to ensuring that all our kids and families can access the opportunities and tools needed to thrive, that safety and inclusion are on the forefront–and so that teachers and school communities are supported. We must create transparent and transformative processes so that working parents and kids in the district can hit the ground running and any barriers are addressed.

In addition to my advocacy work, I am a published author, writing extensively about parenting, parent involvement in schools, the critical role of educators, race relations, and gender stereotypes. I was also a part of ABC 10's digital series "Moms Explain All" and "Three Moms and a Dad."

My husband Sudeep and I have been happily married since 2004. We are the proud parents of two sons, Akshaj, a sophomore at UCLA, and Atiksh, an eighth-grade student in Natomas. Our family is the center of my life, and their experiences have greatly influenced my passion for education advocacy. We enjoy traveling, hiking, biking, visiting museums, and volunteering at local community events in our spare time.

I’d love to connect! Let’s talk about my priorities as Natomas Trustee.
